Tooth Extractions

At Summit Dental, it’s our primary goal to help you achieve a healthy and beautiful smile that allows you to maintain your natural teeth for as long as possible. However, sometimes a tooth extraction is the best option for protecting your dental health, and the good news is that Middletown dentist, Dr. Karian can help.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Recommended?

Dr. Karian will always discuss all of your options for treatment with you, and he only recommends tooth extractions as a last resort in these situations:

  • Advanced periodontal (gum) disease
  • A severely decayed, cracked, or broken tooth
  • A tooth that is infected and beyond what a root canal can repair
  • Orthodontic treatment for overly crowded teeth
  • Wisdom teeth

Dr. Karian performs many tooth extractions at Summit Dental, but if an extraction procedure is particularly complicated, and he feels you would benefit from the expertise of an oral surgeon, he will refer you.

We Make Your Comfort a Priority

Tooth extractions at Summit Dental begin by ensuring that you are completely numb and comfortable, so you don’t feel anything during your procedure. Your procedure at our Middletown dental office is typically quick and straightforward, and Dr. Karian will support you with instructions for seamless recovery at home.

Why It’s Important to Replace a Missing Tooth

Once a tooth has been extracted, if it’s not a wisdom tooth, it’s important to think about replacing it as soon as you can. Dr. Karian will discuss tooth replacement options, such as tooth implants, dental bridges, or partial and full dentures with you before your extraction procedure so you can select the option that best suits your needs. A tooth replacement restores beauty and function to your smile, while also protecting your remaining teeth from drifting.

Should My Wisdom Teeth Be Extracted?

Wisdom teeth are your third set of molars that arrive behind your second molars around the ages of 18 to 25. Because of their location at the back of your mouth, they are often hard to reach for brushing and flossing. When you can’t keep them clean, wisdom teeth are at risk for developing tooth decay, cavities, and even gum disease.

Sometimes, wisdom teeth begin to crowd your other teeth, which can often ruin a straight and beautiful smile created with orthodontic treatment. Impacted wisdom teeth that are stuck under the gum line can result in an infection.

Dr. Karian will typically recommend extracting wisdom teeth for one or more of these reasons.
